About

What is International Year of the Reef 2018?

The International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) has declared 2018 as the third International Year of the Reef! IYOR was first held in 1997 and again in 2008!

For IYOR 2018, ICRI encourages us to:

  • strengthen awareness globally about the value of, and threats to, coral reefs and associated ecosystems;
  • promote partnerships between governments, the private sector, academia and civil society on the management of coral reefs;
  • identify and implement effective management strategies for conservation, increased resiliency and sustainable use of these ecosystems and promoting best practices; and
  • share information on best practices in relation to sustainable coral reef management.

What is Singapore Celebrates our Shores?

It is an effort by the Singapore marine community to celebrate International Year of the Reef 2018, along with 60 countries and groups around the world. The marine community in Singapore will celebrate 12 months of year-round activities to celebrate and speak for the amazing shores we have in Singapore! From mangroves to seagrasses, rocky shores to reefs.

All are welcome to participate in Singapore Celebrates our Shores 2018 for International Year of the Reef 2018!

What are some of the activities planned?

One key activity will be the Singapore Blue Plan 2018, drawn up by science and expert contributors, as well as stakeholders, for submission to government in the third quarter of 2018.

We will also have lots of events to celebrate our shores! There will be fun activities to introduce Singapore's shores to everyone. And to start conversations about our shores.
